The Delaware Confederate Monument was placed at the Nutter B. Marvel Museum in Georgetown, Delaware as a collaborative effort between the Sons of Confederate Veterans, The Georgetown Historical Society and the Delaware Grays SCV Camp 2068 (the predecessor organization of the Mason Dixon Guards Camp 2183) with the unveiling on Saturday May 12, 2007.
Guest speaker was our friend compatriot H.K. Edgerton of Tennessee, music by the band “Breaking Nu Ground”, cannon firing by the Richmond Howitzers (commanded by Capt Wes Jones) and proclamations by Mr. Michael Wyatt, Mayor of Georgetown; as well as by representatives of DE Governor Ruth Ann Minner and Senator Tom Carper.
The Monument commemorates the services of soldiers, citizens and political leaders who have ties to, or are from the state Delaware who provided support to the Confederate cause. Names are inscribed upon the monument and two flag poles fly at all times a variety of Confederate flags and the Delaware flag. Upon the monument is a Confederate Battle Flag that contains an extra star for Delaware.
More information can be found on the Delaware Grays website, including a list of all those whose names appear on the granite obelisks. http://descv.org/
In the Fall of 2019 the Delaware State Legislature, in a shifty, last-minute maneuver, defunded the Georgetown Historical Society because of the presence of the monument and the Confederate flag flying overhead. Senator Trey Paradee (D) of Dover was responsible and the camp has been active in helping the GHS raise funds through expanding memberships and fundraising. The monument - and the Georgetown Historical Society - continues to be attacked and threatened, so support of the GHS is crucial for the monument’s ongoing presence.
